Torah #41 What Does It Mean to be Loyal Subjects of the King?
Citizens in older cultures had a King or some sovereign power that they had to pledge loyalty to. Israel was no different. God is their King. The Shema and what came to be known as the Aaronic or Priestly blessing read like Pledges of Loyalty and the King receiving them into His Service. There are blessings for being a servant of the King. You get to sit and eat at the King's Table. To be in service of the King, as a Knight or something, there were often codes of conduct and expectations known as Chivalry. The Torah acts like that Code of Conduct--it is meant only for a Redeemed people. With that, it's important to know Who your King is. Once again, the Aramaic Targums reveal first century Jewish thought about the Messiah.
